About Ash Tree House

Ash Tree House is a residential care home near Middlesbrough supporting a mixed group of adults. Some of our residents are older people who need help with the practical parts of the day. Others are adults with a learning disability, autistic adults or younger adults who want support to get on with their own lives. That mix works because we plan for individuals rather than running one routine for the house. One person may want help to wash and dress and then to be left in peace. Another may want staff alongside them cooking, going out locally, getting to an appointment or sorting out something that has gone wrong. We pay attention to how each person communicates, what they find difficult and what helps them settle, and we build the plan with them and with the people who know them well. Our staff are trained in communication and in supporting somebody who is distressed. Everyday life includes cooking, shopping, keeping your own room how you want it, choosing how to spend the day and getting out into the local area. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable time. Respite stays are available and give family carers a genuine break while the person has a proper stay with us. Please contact us if you would like to come and look round.

What the inspectors found

A plain English summary of the Care Quality Commission inspection behind the current rating of Ash Tree House. Report published 9 February 2024.

  • 11 December 2023, inspection of part of the service (safe and well-led only)

Safe

Staff understood how to protect people from abuse and had training on recognising and reporting it. There were enough skilled staff to meet people's needs and keep them safe. Risks to people were assessed. The service did not always provide a safe, clean, well equipped, well furnished and well maintained environment. An extensive refurbishment plan was in place, with work due to start in January 2024, and the registered manager took action on immediate issues. CQC made a recommendation about infection prevention and control.

Well-led

There was a positive and open culture and the registered manager led by example. Staff knew and understood people well. The service enabled people and those important to them to work with staff to develop the service. Staff valued and acted on people's views.
