About Ashburton House
Ashburton House is a residential care home in Ilford. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays for people who need a short break or whose family carer needs one. The house is run around the people who live in it. Everyone has a support plan written with them, in a form they can use, covering how they like to be supported, what they enjoy, what they find difficult and what they want their week to contain. People go out into Ilford and across London, keep up college, work, clubs and family contact, and we treat that as the purpose of the place rather than an extra. Communication is where we concentrate hardest, particularly where somebody has limited sight or hearing as well as a learning disability. We learn each person's own way of telling us what they want, whether that is speech, signing, objects, symbols or touch, and we make sure every member of the team can use it confidently. When someone becomes distressed we look for the cause rather than the fastest way to stop it, and anything that restricts a person's freedom is agreed properly, recorded and reviewed. We do not yet hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. We are registered with them and work to their standards. Families, advocates and commissioners are welcome to visit.
