About Charlton Lodge
Charlton Lodge is a residential care home in Wantage, Oxfordshire. We are home to older people, including those living with dementia and those with physical disabilities, and we support younger adults too. We also offer respite stays for families who need a planned break. We try to run this as a household rather than a facility. Residents get up when they wake rather than when a rota prefers, eat when they are hungry, and are allowed an afternoon with nothing arranged in it. A warm, well fed, unhurried day in which somebody was properly spoken to is a good day, whatever the sector likes to say about activity. For residents living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the surroundings familiar, and we ask families for the history that lets us understand what somebody means rather than only what they said. For residents with physical disabilities we plan around what the person can still do themselves. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. We would rather say so openly. Anyone considering us should come without an appointment, talk to residents and relatives, and ask us whatever they want to ask, because that will tell them more than anything written here.
