About Whitegates Respite

We are a residential home in Worksop providing short breaks for adults with a learning disability or autism. People come to us for a planned stay rather than to live here permanently, and we think that makes what we do a particular job rather than a smaller version of long term care. A short break has to work for two people at once. It has to be a genuine break for the family carer, which means they can hand over and stop worrying, and it has to be a stay the person themselves looks forward to rather than endures. Getting both right depends on preparation. We want to know beforehand how somebody communicates, what their routine is, what they eat, what unsettles them, what they enjoy and what helps when a day goes wrong. The more we know before somebody arrives, the less of the stay is spent working it out. Familiarity matters a great deal in short break care, so we try to keep the same staff supporting the same people across visits. Coming back to faces you recognise takes a lot of the anxiety out of arriving. Families who use short breaks are usually doing a great deal at home, often for years, and we take seriously that they are trusting us with somebody they know better than anyone. If you are considering short breaks here, please get in touch and we will talk it through properly.
