About Cambian Dilston College
Cambian Dilston College, near Corbridge in Northumberland, provides residential care alongside education for young adults with learning disabilities and for autistic young adults. We also offer respite stays. What makes this place work is that care and learning are not separate things here. The skills somebody needs to run a life, cooking, budgeting, travelling, keeping a household, looking after their health, getting on with other people, are learned in the course of doing them rather than in a classroom apart from real life. Our job is to support that patiently, with the right amount of help at the right time, and to step back as somebody becomes able to manage more. We pay close attention to how each person communicates, whether that is through speech, signs, symbols, a device or their behaviour, and we work alongside teaching staff, speech and language therapists and health colleagues so that everybody is pulling in the same direction. Where somebody becomes distressed, we look at why rather than simply managing the behaviour. Predictable routines and clear information given in good time make a great deal of difference. The setting is rural and the grounds get used properly. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and professionals are welcome to visit.
