About Holmlea Care Home
Holmlea is a residential care home in North Shields. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and respite stays are part of what we do. This runs like a home rather than a shift pattern. People wake when they wake and spend the day as they please, and a quiet one is not a failure. Dementia care here depends on knowing the person. We ask relatives early for the working life, the places and the music, because that information is much harder to gather later and it is what still connects when a good deal else has gone. Food gets more thought than people expect. Appetite is often the first thing to go, and a meal that arrives cold, or needing help that has not come, quietly becomes a meal not eaten. If a resident cannot easily speak up for themselves, we make sure somebody does on their behalf, whether a relative or an independent advocate. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Come at a mealtime and watch whether anybody is sitting waiting for help to eat, because that tells you a good deal.
