About Kathleen Rutland House

Kathleen Rutland House is a residential care home in Leicester, supporting older people and younger adults from the city and surrounding Leicestershire, including many people living with dementia. Our aim is a household rather than an institution, and the difference tends to show in small, checkable things. Whether anybody knocks before coming into your room. Whether you can still make your own tea when you want one. Whether getting up at half past nine is treated as a preference or a problem. Whether the food is worth looking forward to or merely got through. None of that is possible unless the practical side is dependable, so we are careful about personal care, medication, meals cooked in our own kitchen, and having staff awake and available through the night. Dementia is part of most of our days. We stopped correcting people a long time ago. Consistent staff, a calm house and enough of a person's history to find the thread of a conversation achieve far more, and families are usually the ones who can give us that history. We ask for it early, not as a form filling exercise but because it is genuinely useful on a difficult afternoon. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Come and see us at a busy time of day and ask the people who live here what they make of the place. That will tell you more than we can.

More about the care at Kathleen Rutland House

Dementia Care at Kathleen Rutland House

Families are usually the ones who can supply a person's history, this home says, and it asks for that early rather than as a form filling exercise. It also says it stopped correcting people a long time ago, which is the single most useful habit in dementia care. Consistent staff, a calm house and enough of somebody's life to find the thread of a conversation do the rest. The registration is residential rather than nursing, so there is a ceiling on what can be managed later. Ask how a difficult afternoon is handled. Ask at what point the home would say it could no longer cope.

Residential Care at Kathleen Rutland House

Forty two places are registered here, all residential rather than nursing, which sets the limit on what the home can manage. Residential care means everyday living support without nurses on the premises: cooked meals, personal care, medication, company and a household that runs to the residents' habits. Clinical needs are met by GPs and community nurses visiting instead. Fees for this kind of care in the East Midlands typically run from £850 to £1100 a week, while Leicestershire usually pays between £680 and £820. Ask what would happen if a resident came to need nursing care, and whether that would mean moving on from Leicester.

Older Person Care at Kathleen Rutland House

Whether anybody knocks before coming into your room is one of the small checkable things this home says the difference shows up in. The others it lists are whether you can still make your own tea when you want one and whether the food is worth looking forward to. Behind that sit personal care, medication, meals cooked in the home's own kitchen, and staff awake and available through the night, which Kathleen Rutland House states plainly. Ask how many staff that means for forty two residents. Ask how a new resident's routine is learned in the first fortnight. Ask who telephones a relative when something changes overnight.

Younger Adults at Kathleen Rutland House

Leicestershire usually pays about £680 to £820 a week, against East Midlands fees of £850 to £1100. For an adult under sixty five in a house of forty two mostly older residents, the question is what a week actually holds. Ask what a younger resident would do with their days, and whether anyone near their age lives at the home.
