About Mencap in - 100 Pennine Crescent
We are a residential care home on Pennine Crescent in Huddersfield, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Respite stays are part of what we do. With only a handful of residents, nothing much passes unnoticed. Staff know habits and moods closely, and plans bend to people rather than people to plans. Rooms are arranged as people want them, the menu and the shopping are genuinely discussed, and decisions about the house get made together. What we are really supporting is a life with something in it: a job, a course, a club, somewhere regular to go. Those are the purpose rather than extras attached to it. Predictability matters a great deal here, so we plan ahead and explain changes early rather than rearranging for our own convenience. Declining to join in is always allowed. We ask, we ask again another day, and we do not treat a preference for solitude as a problem to be solved. Food preferences are taken seriously, including the ones that seem fussy. Somebody who dislikes what is on offer should be able to have something else without making a fuss about it. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here what they would change.
