Cartref House is a residential care home in Sittingbourne, Kent, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults. This is somebody's home first, and we run it that way. The people who live here have their own routines, their own tastes in food and music, their own friendships and their own ideas about how a week should go, so we do not work everyone to a single timetable. Support might mean help with personal care, medication and health appointments, a hand with cooking, shopping, laundry and money, or company on a bus journey, at a college course, at work or on a visit to family. We take time to learn how each person communicates a preference, a worry or a refusal, including those who use few or no words, so that choices are genuinely their own. We offer respite stays as well. For some families a planned break is what makes the rest of the year workable, and for the person staying it can be an enjoyable change and a chance to try a little more independence. We work openly with families and with the professionals involved in someone's life, and we would rather raise a concern early than smooth it over. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better measure is whether people here are getting the life they want, which we review with them regularly.
