About Moordean
Moordean is a residential care home in Sheerness, Kent, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Most of those living here are younger adults, and we also offer respite stays. We treat this as somebody's home rather than a placement. People arrange their own rooms, share properly in the shopping and the meals, and have a hand in how the household runs. Where somebody can do a thing themselves, our job is to make that possible rather than to do it faster for them. Where a person wants a job, a course or a club, we treat that as the purpose of the support rather than an addition to it. It is usually what makes the rest of the week worth arranging, and being in a small town helps, because people get known locally on their own terms. We are careful with routine and we explain changes early, since for several people here that is what makes a day workable. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are pleased with it and conscious that it describes a period rather than a fixed quality. What keeps it true is asking people here what would make this better, and then acting.

What the inspectors found
A plain English summary of the Care Quality Commission inspection behind the current rating of Moordean. Report published 13 December 2017.
- 17 August 2017
- 6 places, 6 people were using the service at the time
Safe
Inspectors found that staff clearly understood their roles in minimising risk. Risk assessments were reviewed regularly to check that the level of risk was still right for each person. Inspectors also found that individual behaviour strategies consistently reduced the instances, severity and intensity of harm or potential harm.
Effective
Inspectors found that staff received specialised training based on each person's conditions. Each person had access to a mentor, a member of staff with enhanced training in Positive Behavioural Therapies. Staff made prompt referrals and helped people get medical care through GPs.
Caring
Inspectors found that staff saw themselves as enablers who promoted people's rights and participation. Positive behaviour approaches supported social inclusion and helped people keep in contact with family members. Providers and staff worked with families to overcome challenges in keeping that contact.
Responsive
CQC rated this area Outstanding. Inspectors found that people's lives were based on person centred circles of support, and that people were protected from institutionalisation. When people reacted negatively to an activity, staff adapted their approach instead of excluding them. Key family members were involved in planning positive behavioural therapies.
Well-led
CQC rated this area Outstanding. Inspectors found that the providers visited the service every week, chaired clinical meetings and oversaw the planning and daily running of the service. They shared their vision and values with staff. Inspectors described the providers as innovative and creative, and said they took part in research and collected behaviour data to improve outcomes for people.
