About Sunset Cottage

Sunset Cottage is a small residential care home near Newton Abbot supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays. Being small is what makes this work. A handful of people live here, everyone knows everyone, and support is genuinely shaped around individuals rather than around a large rota. People have their own rooms and their own things, and they have a real say in the running of the house, from meals and shopping to how the week is planned. We support people to do things rather than doing things for them. Cooking, shopping, managing money, using transport and getting out locally are all done together, because independence is built through practice rather than granted on paper. Communication is where we start with everyone. Some of the people here use speech, others use signs, symbols or objects, and others tell us what they need through behaviour that takes patience to read. We put that time in and keep at it as things change. Routines are steady and changes are planned and explained well ahead rather than sprung on anyone. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. If you are looking at options in Devon, please get in touch and come and visit. People are welcome to come more than once.
