College House is a residential home in Newton Abbot, Devon, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Some people live with us permanently and others come for respite, either regularly as part of an arrangement with their family or occasionally when circumstances at home make a short stay helpful. Our starting point is that this is the residents' house. People choose how their room looks, what they eat, how they spend their time and who they see. Support is there for the parts of life that are difficult, not for the parts that are already going well, and we are careful not to take over tasks somebody can do themselves with a bit of time or a different approach. Where communication is hard, we learn the person's own ways of telling us what they want, and we take those seriously. A good week here has structure and variety in it: work or college where that applies, activities in the local community, seeing family and friends, and time at home doing the everyday things like cooking, shopping and looking after the house. Our staff are trained to support people who need routine and predictability, and to respond calmly and consistently when somebody is distressed. We work closely with families, social workers and health colleagues in Devon, and we are honest with everyone about how things are going.
