About Unity House
We are a residential care home in Peterlee supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, including younger adults and older people who need help with daily living. The house is run as a household rather than an institution. Everyone has their own room and their own things, and the week is worked out between the people who live here and the staff supporting them: what is cooked, when the shopping is done, who wants to go out and where to. For adults who have often had decisions made on their behalf, that ordinary degree of control is much of the point. Support is built around what each person wants to be able to do. For some that means a job, a college course or a regular volunteering day. For others it is getting out regularly, keeping up with family, managing money with a hand from staff, or learning to do more around the house. Where people have grown older here, needs change and we change with them, adding help with personal care, mobility and health appointments rather than suggesting a move. Consistency counts for a great deal, particularly for autistic people, so we keep staffing as settled as we can. Respite stays are available alongside longer places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit and meet the people who live here.
