About Redwood Reablement Unit
The Redwood Reablement Unit in Dunstable provides short stays for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities, and we also take respite admissions. What we do here is different from a permanent care home place, and the difference is the direction of travel. People usually come to us after a spell in hospital, or at a point where things at home have become difficult, and our aim is to help them regain as much independence as possible before going back to their own home. That means encouraging and supporting rather than simply doing things for people, even when doing would be quicker, and it means being honest with the person and their family about how progress is going. Practically, we help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and getting about, and we work closely with the health and social care professionals involved so that equipment, adaptations and ongoing support are in place before somebody leaves us rather than afterwards. For people living with dementia we keep the environment calm, the routine predictable and staffing as consistent as we can, because unfamiliarity is unsettling and a short stay is unsettling enough already. Respite admissions are planned with the same care, giving family carers a genuine break. If you are a family member or a professional looking at a short stay at Redwood, please get in touch and we will talk it through with you.
