About Schankin House
Schankin House is a residential home in Barking, east London. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, most of them younger adults, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. This is a house on a street rather than an institution, and that is not a small distinction. The people who live here have their own rooms and their own things and a real say in how a week looks. Support plans are agreed with the person and written in language the person can actually read. Staff are matched to people with some thought instead of being allocated to whoever is on shift. Support means doing things with people rather than to them or for them. Cooking, shopping, budgeting, travel, appointments, keeping in touch with family, and dealing with organisations that were plainly not designed for people who think differently. Where somebody needs a great deal of structure and predictability in order to feel safe, we hold that routine consistently. Barking is busy and well connected, and several of the people here are out most days, with support or without it. That independence is the point rather than a risk to be managed away. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Come and meet the people who live here.
