About Ann House
Ann House is a nursing home in Kendal. We provide nursing care for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Combining nursing with learning disability support is a particular skill. It means understanding somebody's health closely enough to spot a problem early, which matters a great deal because health needs are so often missed for people with a learning disability, while remembering that the person is not a set of conditions and is entitled to an ordinary life with things in it worth getting up for. We work at both at once. Because many of the people we support do not use speech, or use it only in certain situations, we spend real time learning how each individual communicates. Pain, discomfort and unhappiness are frequently expressed through behaviour rather than words, and a team that reads those signs correctly prevents a great deal of avoidable suffering. Routines here are steady and changes are explained in advance. We pay attention to sensory surroundings, to the pace of the day and to the company people do or do not want. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and social workers considering a placement are welcome to visit and ask us anything.
