Here at Derwent Lodge, we are a nursing home based in Billingshurst, West Sussex, and we are proud to offer a warm and genuinely caring environment for the people who live with us. We support a range of needs, including older person care, nursing care, dementia care, care for younger adults, and respite care. This means we are well placed to help individuals and families who are navigating some quite significant life changes, and we take that responsibility seriously. Whether someone comes to us for a short respite stay or moves in on a longer term basis, we aim to make sure they feel at home from the very beginning. Getting to know people properly, their preferences, their routines, their histories, matters enormously to how we provide care day to day. We are pleased that our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection resulted in an overall rating of Good. We see that as an honest reflection of the work our staff put in, though we are always looking at how we can do better and continue to improve the experience for everyone living here. Billingshurst is a lovely community to be part of, and we value the connections we have locally. Families are always welcome, and we encourage people to stay involved in the lives of their loved ones. - Inspectors visited on 20 April 2023 as part of a routine inspection.
- First assessment of the service
Safe
People said they felt safe and there were enough staff to care for them. Inspectors found people received medicines safely and were protected from harm and abuse. The service was clean and hygienic, and inspectors looked at infection prevention and control.
Effective
Staff had received relevant training to meet people's needs. Staff worked with outside agencies such as the local authority and healthcare professionals. People enjoyed the food and drinks on offer.
Caring
People told inspectors that staff were kind and that they had a good relationship with them. Inspectors saw friendly relationships had developed between people and staff. People had their dignity, independence and privacy promoted.
Responsive
Care plans were up to date and accurately reflected people's needs. There was a programme of activities, and people could receive visits from their relatives. Complaints were handled appropriately and people's wishes at the end of their life were respected.
Well-led
The provider had systems of quality assurance to measure and monitor the standard of the service and drive improvement. These systems helped to assess risks and to make sure the provider learned from any mistakes.
