About Huws
Huws is a nursing home in Nottingham. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults who also have nursing needs, including people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Combining nursing with learning disability support is a particular skill. It means understanding somebody's health closely enough to spot a problem early, while remembering that the person is not a set of conditions and is entitled to an ordinary life with things in it worth getting up for. We work at both at once. Because many of the people we support do not use speech, or use it only in certain situations, we spend real time learning how each individual communicates. Pain, discomfort and unhappiness are frequently expressed through behaviour rather than words, and a team that reads those signs correctly prevents a great deal of avoidable suffering. Routines here are steady and changes are explained in advance. We pay attention to sensory surroundings, to the pace of the day and to the company people do or do not want. Respite gives families a planned break and gives the person a stay they know, with staff who already understand them. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us good overall. If you are looking for nursing support for a relative in Nottingham, we would be glad to show you round.
