About Hawkinge House Proactive Assessment Unit
We are a nursing unit at Hawkinge House in Folkestone, providing assessment and nursing care for people whose needs are not yet settled. We work with older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. A good deal of our work involves people who have come out of hospital, or who have reached a point at home where nobody is quite sure what they need next. Taking the time to find that out properly, with registered nurses on duty and staff who watch how somebody actually manages across a day rather than in a single assessment, usually leads to a better decision than hurrying it. Sometimes that decision is a return home with support, sometimes it is a longer term place somewhere, and we would rather say honestly what we think than tell a family what they would like to hear. Alongside the clinical work, people here choose when they get up, what they wear, what they eat and who they want beside them. For somebody living with dementia, patience and familiarity settle them far better than any procedure. We work closely with general practitioners, community teams, therapists and hospital staff and keep families properly informed. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please get in touch if you would like to know more.
