About Monread Lodge
Monread Lodge is a nursing home in Knebworth, providing nursing care for older people and younger adults across Hertfordshire, including many people living with dementia. Qualified nurses are here at every hour, and that is what makes the rest possible. Complex medication, wound care, attention to nutrition, pain and skin, and the close observation that catches deterioration before it becomes an emergency are routine work for us. Several of the people who move in have spent months going in and out of hospital, and the first thing that changes is that the cycle stops. Dementia nursing is a large part of what we do, and we have firm views about it. The assumption that people with advanced dementia have stopped noticing is wrong in our experience. Tone of voice registers. Being rushed registers. A familiar face registers. So we protect continuity of staffing, we speak to people rather than about them, and we take the time to learn what settles a particular person when they are frightened, because it is rarely the same thing twice. Families often carry a lot of guilt about this stage of things, and part of our job is making the home somewhere they want to be rather than somewhere they visit out of duty. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Visit us at a busy time, speak to the nurses on duty and ask how the hard nights are handled.

More about the care at Monread Lodge
Nursing Care at Monread Lodge
Several of the people who move in have spent months going in and out of hospital, the home says, and the first thing that changes is that the cycle stops. That is what qualified nurses on site at every hour are for: complex medication, wound care, attention to nutrition, pain and skin, and observation close enough to catch deterioration early. People with stable needs rarely require this, but people whose health swings about usually do. Where a resident is assessed as needing nursing, the NHS pays roughly £235 a week towards that element of the fee through NHS Funded Nursing Care. Ask whether the assessment has been requested and how the money shows on the invoice.
Dementia Care at Monread Lodge
The assumption that people with advanced dementia have stopped noticing is wrong in this home's experience, and that is the right place to begin. Tone of voice registers, being rushed registers, and a familiar face registers, which is why continuity of staffing matters more than any feature of a building. Monread Lodge says it takes time to learn what settles a particular person when they are frightened, because it is rarely the same thing twice. Dementia nursing is described as a large part of the work here. Ask what happens when a resident becomes distressed late in the day. Ask whether someone who wants to walk can do so safely indoors.
Older Person Care at Monread Lodge
Monread Lodge is registered for sixty two people and holds the nursing category, which shapes who tends to move in. For an older resident the day is built from help with washing and dressing, medication given properly, meals, and company that does not have to be requested. The home says it speaks to people rather than about them and protects continuity of staffing, which is the sort of detail that shows up in how a morning feels. Nothing on the public record covers the night shift. Ask how many staff are awake overnight in Knebworth and how many of them are registered nurses. Ask who would telephone a relative if something changed at four in the morning.
Younger Adults at Monread Lodge
The gap between what Hertfordshire pays, about £900 to £1100 a week, and typical fees in the East of £1250 to £1600 usually lands on the family. For an adult under sixty five there is a second question, which is what the days hold. Ask what a younger resident would actually do with a week here, and whether anyone near their age lives at the home.
