Arranging care in Manchester
Manchester City Council is the local authority for the city of Manchester in the North West of England, covering neighbourhoods including Didsbury, Withington, Chorlton and Gorton. As a Metropolitan Borough, it is responsible for adult social care across the whole city, from the leafy suburbs of south Manchester to the more urban communities closer to the city centre.
If you or a relative living in Manchester need support, the first step is usually to contact the council's Adult Social Care team. They will arrange a free needs assessment under the Care Act, looking at daily tasks, mobility, memory and how you are managing at home. If the assessment shows you need support, a separate financial assessment then looks at income, savings and property to work out how much, if anything, you will be asked to contribute towards your care in Manchester.
Care choices across the city
The local care market is sizeable, with 209 CQC-registered care homes across Manchester City Council's area. That means families in places like Chorlton, Withington or Gorton often have a genuine choice between smaller residential care homes closer to home and larger nursing homes with on-site clinical staff, as well as home care providers who can visit in shorter or longer calls.
Paying for care
Depending on the financial assessment, care in Manchester may be council funded, part funded through a personal budget or direct payment, or paid for privately. NHS Continuing Healthcare may cover the full cost where needs are primarily health related, and Attendance Allowance can also help. Nationally, home care typically costs around £20 to £30 per hour, residential care homes average roughly £900 to £1,200 per week, and nursing homes tend to run higher at around £1,100 to £1,400 per week, with Manchester fees usually sitting within these ranges depending on the provider and level of need.
Starting the conversation early with Manchester City Council, and shortlisting two or three homes or agencies to visit, is often the calmest way to move forward.
