About Support at Home

Support at Home provides help in people's own houses in Kendal and across Westmorland and Furness. The people we visit include older people, many of them living with dementia, as well as younger adults, people with a learning disability or autism, people with a physical disability, people with sight or hearing loss and people managing mental health conditions. With a range that wide we do not pretend one approach suits everybody. We spend proper time at the start understanding how somebody lives, what they want help with and what they would rather keep doing themselves, and we then think carefully about which carer suits which person. The right match makes more difference than anything written in a plan, and once it is working we protect it by keeping the same small team visiting. We cover a largely rural area with long distances between calls and roads that are difficult in winter, so we plan our rounds realistically rather than promising times we cannot keep. Visits can cover personal care and medication, cooking, shopping and housework, support to get out, or company for somebody who sees very few people in a week. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We treat it as the standard we are expected to hold rather than an achievement to display, and we keep asking the people we support whether we are doing what we promised.
