Our work is built around the life somebody already leads, and our aim is to support it rather than rearrange it for our own convenience. The people we support have a wide range of needs. Older adults who need help with personal care, medication, meals or getting safely about the house. People living with dementia, where familiarity and an unhurried manner do more good than anything else. People living with mental health conditions, where a steady relationship and early attention to changes count for most. People with physical disabilities, and people with a visual or hearing impairment, where we adapt how we assist and how we communicate so that nobody is spoken about rather than spoken to. We also support people living with eating disorders and people affected by alcohol or drug misuse, without judgement and at the pace they set, along with younger adults whose weeks are organised around work, study and family. Wherever the rota allows, the same small group of workers visits each person, because that is what turns a series of visits into a relationship.
