We try to provide exactly that and no more, because doing things for somebody that they can still manage takes something away from them. Everything starts with a visit and an unhurried conversation. What does the day look like now, what has become difficult, and what would the person rather keep doing for themselves. From that we agree who comes, when and what they do, with family or an advocate involved whenever the person wants them there. Visits cover personal care, help with medication, meals and drinks, housework and laundry, shopping, getting to appointments, and company for people whose days have grown very quiet. For those living with dementia we keep the same small team visiting and work at their pace. Where somebody has a physical disability we look closely at equipment, transfers and how the home is arranged.
