About SCC Prison Social Care Team
We are the prison social care team, providing social care to people in custody in Surrey. Prisons hold a steadily ageing population, and alongside them people with physical disabilities, people with a learning disability, autistic people, people living with dementia, people living with mental health conditions, people with a visual or hearing impairment, people living with an eating disorder and people dealing with alcohol or drug misuse. All of them have the same right to social care as anybody else, and our job is to make that right real in a setting that was not designed for it. The work itself is much like care anywhere: personal care, help with washing and dressing, support with meals, mobility, equipment and the daily tasks that have become difficult. What is different is the setting, which shapes everything from how and when we can visit to how we work alongside prison staff and healthcare colleagues. We assess what somebody needs, agree it with them, and press for the adjustments that make it workable. People in custody are often used to being talked about rather than talked to, so we try to be straightforward, to explain what we can and cannot do, and to do what we said we would. Please get in touch if you would like to know more about our work.
