To carry on living in their own house, with their own belongings and their own way of running a day, helped just enough to make that safe and manageable. Our job is to provide that help without taking the household over. We begin with a visit and an unhurried conversation about what has genuinely become difficult, which is often not what families assume. Sometimes it is washing and dressing, sometimes medication or meals, sometimes getting to appointments, and quite often it is simply that the days have grown very long and quiet. The plan follows from that and is revised as needs change. We keep the team around each person small and introduce new staff properly rather than sending somebody unannounced. For people living with dementia and for anyone who cannot see or hear well, a familiar voice at the door and an unhurried manner matter a great deal. Where somebody is managing a mental health condition we keep support consistent and work with their community team.
