We ask, we agree, and we avoid doing things for people that they would rather do themselves. Communication is a large part of this work. Not everybody uses speech, so our staff learn how each person makes themselves understood and how they show that something is wrong. Where somebody becomes distressed we look for the reason rather than treating the behaviour as the problem. We keep staff teams as settled as we can, because people who know each other well work far better together, and we plan support with the person, families and other professionals so that everyone is working from the same understanding.
