About Housing and Independent Living Services
Wordsley Housing and Independent Living supports adults in Wordsley and across the Dudley area, in their own homes and in their own tenancies. We work with older people, people managing mental health conditions and younger adults. Our aim is fairly specific: to make independent living genuinely workable rather than nominally available. That means starting with somebody's tenancy, their money, their post, their appointments and their routines, and helping with whichever of those has become unmanageable, without taking over the parts that have not. Independence that is quietly removed for the sake of tidiness is very hard to recover. Practically we help with personal care, medication, meals, household jobs, shopping and getting to appointments, and we also spend a good deal of time on the things that are less obviously care: opening the letter that has been sitting there for a fortnight, working out what a bill actually means, getting somebody to a meeting they have been dreading. Where mental health is part of the picture, the useful thing is steadiness. We keep to what we have agreed, we notice when somebody is not themselves, and we are reliable on the difficult weeks rather than only the good ones. Where community teams are involved we work with them properly. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall, and we keep asking the people we support what needs to change.
