We are a home care agency in Coventry, supporting people in their own homes. We visit older people, including many living with dementia, adults with mental health needs, people with physical disabilities, people living with sight or hearing loss, younger adults, and people whose lives have been affected by alcohol or drugs. Because the people we support differ so much, so does the support. For some it is brief daily calls covering personal care, medication and a meal. For others it is longer visits built around getting out of the house, keeping appointments and managing the parts of the week that have become hard. For a family under strain, it may simply be dependable help at the times of day that had become impossible to cover. We agree the support with the person first, write it down clearly and review it when things change, including reducing it when it is no longer needed. We are honest about our limits as well. Where somebody needs something we could not provide properly, we say so rather than take the work on and manage it badly. Continuity is something we work at. The same carers going to the same people means a familiar face at the door and somebody who notices quickly when a person is not themselves.
