We are a home care team based at Kiran Heights in Barking, supporting people in their own homes across the borough. We work with older adults, adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and younger adults who want support to live independently rather than to be looked after. We begin with what the person wants their life to look like rather than with a list of tasks. For many of those we support, our purpose is to make it possible for them to do things themselves and then to step back: cooking, managing money, getting to a job or a course, using the bus, dealing with the everyday business that can be genuinely daunting on your own. Predictability is central to this. Knowing who is coming and when, being told about changes in good time, and not having arrangements altered casually are often what separates a manageable week from a hard one, and the cost of getting it wrong falls on the person rather than on us. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission, and we would rather state that than leave it unmentioned. We are happy to be asked how we recruit, train and supervise our staff, and to be judged on what the people we already support say about us.
