Choosing the right care home in Exmouth
Sorting a long list by rating
With a range of homes this size, the inspection judgements are the quickest first filter. Rose Lodge Exmouth and Exmouth House are rated Outstanding, a judgement inspectors reserve for services performing well beyond the expected standard. Twelve more are rated Good, among them Brimley, Brandon House, Miramar, The Lawns, The Homestead, Southgarth Care Home, Raleigh Manor Care Home, Sheridan House and Dove Lodge Care Home. Three, Rest Haven Residential Home, Trianon and Manor Lodge Care Home, have not yet been rated, so there is no inspection judgement to weigh in their case and other evidence has to do more work.
What the rating cannot tell you
A rating describes a home at the moment inspectors visited, so check the date and ask what has changed since, particularly where the manager is new. Beyond that, the decision usually turns on fit. How near is the home to the people who will visit, since regular visitors are among the strongest safeguards a resident has? Can the home support the specific needs involved, whether that is dementia, limited mobility or a routine that matters a great deal to the person? Is there a bed available in the timescale you actually have?
What to look for in person
Visit at a busy time, such as during a meal, when a home is hardest to present at its best. Ask how many staff are on duty by day and overnight, how much of the team is permanent rather than agency, and how long the manager has been in post. Ask what happens if a resident's needs grow beyond personal care, because a home registered for residential care cannot provide nursing on site. Then notice the ordinary things: whether residents look occupied, whether staff use their names, and whether anyone seems to be waiting a long time for attention.
Arranging and funding a place in Exmouth
Start with an assessment of needs
An assessment is free, open to anyone who appears to need care whatever their savings, and it produces a written record that any home will find useful. Devon County Council Adult Social Care carries it out, considering health, mobility, medication and daily routine. Where eligible needs are identified, a financial assessment follows and settles how much of the weekly fee public funding meets and how much the resident pays from income and capital.
Understanding the fees
Residential fees vary between homes and rise over time, so ask each one for a written schedule showing the core weekly charge and anything billed separately, such as hairdressing, chiropody or outings. Where capital sits above the national threshold the resident pays in full, and where it falls below, the council contributes while the resident pays an assessed amount from income. If the preferred home charges above the council rate, a third party contribution is usually needed to cover the difference. Ask what notice is given before fees increase, which is the question most easily forgotten in the rush of a move.
