About 5 St Margaret's Gardens
We are a small residential care home at 5 St Margaret's Gardens in Melksham, Wiltshire. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, including younger adults and older people who have lived with a learning disability all their lives. A house this size works differently from a large home, and that is rather the point. People know one another, the staff team is small enough for everyone to be familiar, and the week is built around the people who live here instead of around a timetable. Residents are involved in how the household runs, from what goes on the shopping list to how the rooms are arranged. Communication is where we start with everyone. We find out how each person prefers to express themselves and to be spoken with, including people who use few or no words, and we adapt to them rather than the other way round. For autistic residents we take sensory needs seriously, keep the environment predictable, and give proper notice before anything changes. Our aim is for people to do more for themselves over time, not less. That means the ordinary skills of running a life: cooking, managing money, getting out locally, keeping up with the people who matter to them. Progress is specific and often slow, and we would rather support it than take it over. The Care Quality Commission last rated us good overall. Visitors and questions are both welcome.
