About 19 Berryfield Road

19 Berryfield Road is a small residential care home in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, including younger adults and older residents. A small house allows us to work at the pace of the people living in it. Residents take part in how the household is run, what is cooked and bought, and what their weeks contain, and because our team is small they are known properly rather than described in a file. The town is on the doorstep and we use it, because a home that turns inward stops being much of a home. Communication comes before everything else. We learn how each resident makes themselves understood and prefers to be spoken with, including those who use few or no words, and the adapting is our job rather than theirs. For autistic residents we treat sensory comfort and predictability as essential, not optional, and we prepare people properly for anything that is going to change. We support people to take on more for themselves where that is what they want: cooking, money, travelling locally, keeping up with family and friends. Where a long standing routine is working, we leave it alone and protect it. Our last overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. We keep families, advocates and community teams closely involved, and we are happy to arrange a visit or answer questions.
