About Hourigan House Residential Care Home
Hourigan House is a residential care home in Leigh, in the borough of Wigan. We look after older people who can no longer manage at home on their own, and a good proportion of the people living here have dementia. We also support some younger adults, and we offer respite as well as permanent places. We are not a nursing home. What we do is the daily, unglamorous and genuinely important work of helping somebody wash, dress, take their tablets, eat a decent meal and stay part of the world. Done properly that is a skilled job, and it rests almost entirely on whether the staff know the person. So we put our effort into keeping staff rather than into brochures. The people who work here tend to be from Leigh and the villages round about, and many have been with us a long while. For residents with dementia we have learned that structure helps more than stimulation. The same faces, meals at the same times, a familiar chair, nothing moved without reason. Within that, plenty happens. There is singing, there is a garden, there are children and dogs through the door regularly, and there is a lot of tea. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are weighing up care for your mother or father, come and sit in the lounge for half an hour. You will learn more that way than from anything we could write.
