About Magellan House
Magellan House is a residential home in East Grinstead for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. The people who live here are mostly younger adults building the life they want, and the home exists to support that rather than to manage it. We start from the assumption that everyone here has preferences, opinions and ambitions, and that our job is to find out what they are, including where someone does not use speech to tell us. Communication is something we work at seriously, using whatever approach suits the individual, and we do not make decisions about a person without involving them. Daily life is built around the people who live here. That covers the practical business of cooking, shopping, keeping a room the way you like it and managing money, and it covers the things that make a week worth having, whether that is work, college, sport, music or simply a regular trip to a favourite place. For autistic people in particular we pay close attention to routine, sensory environment and advance notice of any change. We offer respite stays as well, which can give families a planned break and give the person a positive experience away from home.
