About Spinney (The)
We are The Spinney, a residential care home in Waltham Forest, north east London. We provide a home for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also take respite stays. Residential care means helping with what has become hard work and leaving everything else with the person. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, getting about safely, and the everyday company that makes a day worth getting up for. Anything beyond our registration we arrange with district nurses and GPs rather than stretching to cover ourselves. Dementia shapes a good deal of our day. We have learned that correcting somebody's version of events achieves nothing, and that knowing who a person has been tells us far more than any list of symptoms. A resident who spent decades in a particular trade or raising a family nearby still carries that with them, and a conversation that connects with it can turn an afternoon around. We try hard to keep the place feeling like somewhere people live rather than somewhere they are kept. Own belongings, own routines, visitors who do not need to book, and meals that are sociable. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.
