About Highcliffe Care Centre
Highcliffe is a residential care home in Sunderland. Those living here include older people, many living with dementia, and people with physical disabilities. We support younger adults too, and respite stays are part of what we do. We keep our attention on the hours a visitor never sees: early mornings, when people need time rather than efficiency, and late evenings when the place goes quiet and somebody who cannot sleep wants company rather than to be settled. For residents living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the surroundings unchanged, and we ask relatives early for the working life, the places and the names, because that information is much harder to gather later. For residents with physical disabilities we plan around what a person can still manage themselves rather than what is fastest for us, because independence given up for convenience is rarely handed back. Respite guests get the same preparation as anybody else. We find out beforehand how somebody likes things done, since a fortnight leaves no room for guesswork. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Our own test is sharper: whether somebody who has lived here a year still feels at home, and we ask them directly rather than assuming.
