About Brentwood
Brentwood is a residential care home in Sunderland supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We are a small house and we want it to feel like one. People have their own rooms, decorated as they like them, and a say in how the household runs, from what is on the shopping list to what happens at the weekend. Support is there for the things that need it and stays out of the way of the things that do not. The aim is a full ordinary life rather than a well managed one. That means work, college, volunteering, clubs, friendships, family, holidays and the everyday freedom to change your mind. Where something looks risky, we work out how to make it possible rather than reaching for a reason to say no. Communication is where we put most of our effort. Nearly every difficulty in this kind of support traces back to somebody not being understood, so we learn how each person tells us what they want, in whatever form that takes, and we make sure the whole team can read it. When somebody is distressed, we look at what we might change before we look at them. Sunderland has plenty going on and being part of it is the point rather than an extra. Respite stays are available for families needing a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. You are welcome to visit and see the house for yourself.
