About Wellford Gardens
Wellford Gardens is a residential care home in Oxford, supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia. We try to run a house rather than an institution, and the difference is mostly in small decisions. People get up when they are ready rather than when a rota suggests. Meals are unhurried. Someone who wants their own company can have it without being coaxed into the lounge. Help with washing and dressing is given in a way that protects dignity, which usually comes down to asking first, explaining what we are doing and never taking over a task a person can still manage themselves. Dementia care is a large part of our work, and the most useful knowledge nearly always comes from families. What somebody did for a living, who they are thinking of when the late afternoon becomes difficult, what music settles them. We ask for that history, record it and pass it between shifts. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and have not yet been given an overall rating. We say so plainly, and we would encourage anyone considering a move to visit and judge the place for themselves.
