About The Chiltern Centre
The Chiltern Centre is a care home in Henley on Thames. We provide residential care for younger adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Supporting somebody who has both a learning disability and a sensory impairment takes real skill. If a person cannot see or hear well, the ordinary ways of explaining what is about to happen do not work, and the world becomes unpredictable in a way that is frightening rather than merely inconvenient. So we spend serious time on communication, using touch, objects, signing or whatever fits the person, and we never assume that a lack of response means a lack of understanding. Days here are meant to have purpose in them. People have things they are working towards, places they go and activities that suit them rather than filling time. Routines are steady and changes are prepared for well in advance. Respite gives families a break and gives the person a short stay with people who already know how to support them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and social workers are welcome to visit and see how we work.
