About St Johns House
St Johns House is a residential care home in Kirk Hammerton, set in the North Yorkshire countryside, and we provide a home for older people. We also offer respite stays, whether that is to give a family carer a break or to help somebody regain their confidence after a spell of illness. We are not a large place and we have no interest in becoming one. What we offer is attention to the person, which sounds simple and is actually the hardest thing in care to sustain. It means knowing how everybody likes their breakfast, which chair is theirs, who wants the radio on and who cannot bear it, who likes a walk in the garden before lunch. We ask, we remember and we act on it. The countryside around us gets used. Residents who want to be outside are helped to be outside, and the garden is as much a part of the home as any room indoors. Families visit freely and we keep in touch openly, raising things early rather than waiting. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. That rating came from what our residents and their families said about living here, which is why it means something to us. We do not treat it as finished business, because standards slip quietly if nobody keeps looking. If you are considering a home for a relative in this part of Yorkshire, please come and visit and judge us for yourself.
