About Hickathrift House
Hickathrift House is a residential care home in Wisbech, caring for people from across the Norfolk fens. We support older people and younger adults, including residents living with dementia, and we provide respite stays as well as permanent places. We try to run a household rather than an institution. That shows in small things. Breakfast happens when people wake rather than at a fixed hour. There is always an alternative if what is on the menu does not appeal. Residents' own furniture and pictures are welcome, because a room only becomes yours once your own things are in it. Dementia care here starts with life history. This is farming country and many of our residents have spent their working lives outdoors, keeping early hours and marking the year by the seasons. Understanding that tells us far more about how to settle someone than any general approach could. When a resident becomes distressed, we look for the reason behind it rather than reaching for a routine answer. Family carers need proper rest, and our respite stays are planned so that a guest is welcomed into the life of the house rather than parked at the edge of it. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection, and we keep asking residents and relatives what could be better. Please come and visit us on an ordinary day. It tells you far more than anything written down.
