Birchwood House is a residential care home in Newham, east London. We support older people, adults living with a learning disability or autism, a mental health condition, a physical disability or a visual or hearing impairment, and younger adults who need care in a smaller setting. We take time to learn how someone communicates, what they can manage themselves, what they find difficult and what they actually enjoy, and we build support around that rather than around a routine. Newham is one of the most varied places in the country and our home reflects that. Faith, food, language and family customs matter to people, and we make room for them properly rather than treating everyone the same. Small adjustments for sensory loss, including good lighting, clear signage and unhurried explanation, are simply part of how the house runs.
