About Holmbury Dene (Respite)
We provide short breaks at a house in Lewisham for adults with learning disabilities and autistic people. Short breaks do a great deal of quiet work. They give a family who provide care at home the rest that makes it possible to carry on, and they give the person staying with us a change of scene, company and things to do, which is just as much the point. A good break is not simply somewhere safe to be. It should be something a person looks forward to. Because stays are short, we have to learn quickly, so we ask a great deal before somebody arrives: how they communicate, how they like things done, what settles them, what they would rather do without and who they want us to ring. For autistic people in particular, keeping to the person's own routine matters far more than fitting them into ours, and we try not to change arrangements without warning and explanation. We keep staffing as settled as we can, so that people who come regularly see faces they recognise rather than starting again each time. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are thinking about a short break for yourself or someone in your family, please get in touch and come and see the house.
