About Merlewood House
Merlewood House is a residential care home in Great Harwood, Lancashire, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, people with sight or hearing loss and younger adults. We also offer respite stays for people who need somewhere for a shorter period. This is a house where people live their own lives, not a setting that runs to a rota. People decide how their rooms look, take part in shopping, cooking and keeping the place going as much as they want to and are able to, and get out to what they enjoy locally. Where somebody wants a job, a course or a regular club, we build the support around making that happen. Where the work is won or lost is in detail. How much noise there is in a room. Whether a change of staff or of plan needs flagging several days ahead. Which way of communicating actually reaches a person, whether that is speech, symbols, writing or simply patience and time. For those with sight or hearing loss it also means keeping the layout of the house predictable and introducing ourselves properly every time rather than assuming we have been recognised. We keep the staff team consistent, train people to head off distress early and work closely with families, social workers and health colleagues. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Visitors are welcome to come and see the house.
