About Oakdown House
We are Oakdown House, a small residential care home at Burwash Common in East Sussex. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, and we also offer respite stays where somebody needs a short period of support away from home. Because we are small, life here is domestic. People are involved in the shopping, the cooking and the running of the house as much as they want to be, they choose how their own room looks, and the day is built around what each person actually wants from it rather than around a fixed timetable. Our staff learn how each person communicates, what settles them and what tips a good day into a hard one, and we write that down so it is followed by everyone rather than held in one person's head. Support is offered with an eye on independence. If somebody can do part of a task, they do that part, and we help with the rest. Over time that adds up. We support people to keep up their own relationships, interests and routines outside the house, and to be part of the local community rather than simply living in it. Countryside on the doorstep is one of the pleasures of being here, and walks, gardening and being outdoors feature in a lot of people's weeks. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families, social workers and anyone considering a placement are welcome to visit and ask us anything.
