About Sherbutt House

Sherbutt House in Pocklington is a residential home for adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and we also offer respite stays. People live here for years, so we run the house as their household rather than as a setting they have been placed in. The people who live here decide how their rooms look, have a say in what is bought and cooked, and shape the week around what they actually want to do. We would far rather spend twenty minutes helping somebody do something themselves than two minutes doing it for them, and that choice, made over and over, is most of what we are. Support with personal care, medication, health appointments, money and travel is given exactly as each person has agreed, and recorded in enough detail that a colleague new to a shift can get somebody's morning right. For people who find change difficult, that consistency is the ground everything else stands on. Communication is where the real work lies. Not everyone here uses speech, and understanding how a person shows a preference, a worry or a refusal is what makes choice genuine. We learn each person's way, record it, and check our understanding rather than assuming it. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us outstanding overall. We are glad of it, though what we take from it is mainly that the ordinary daily things were being done properly.
