About Penhayes
Penhayes is a residential home in Exeter supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people who live with mental health conditions. We offer permanent places and respite stays. This is the residents' home and we try never to lose sight of that. People choose how their rooms look, what goes on the shopping list, how they spend their days and who supports them with what. Our staff are there for the parts of life that are genuinely difficult, and we are careful not to take over things somebody can manage given a little time or a different approach. Communication runs through everything. Not everyone here uses speech, and where that is so we take real trouble to learn a person's own ways of telling us what they want and how they are feeling, then build their support around what they have actually told us. For people who rely on routine, we keep the week predictable and give plenty of warning when something will be different. When somebody is distressed, we look for what is behind it rather than treating the behaviour itself as the problem. Life here includes the ordinary domestic business of cooking, shopping and looking after the house, with people joining in as much as they wish, alongside getting out into Exeter, seeing family and friends and pursuing individual interests. We work openly with families, social workers and health colleagues in Devon. If you are considering Penhayes for someone, please arrange to visit and see how it works.

Ask the home. End of life care is not listed on the register. Ask the manager whether residents can remain in the home with hospice or district nurse support.
