About Acorn House

We are Acorn House in Bideford, a small residential care home supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays. Being small is deliberate. It means the people who live here are not dealing with a constant stream of unfamiliar staff, that routines can be genuinely individual rather than set by the needs of a large rota, and that we tend to know without being told when somebody is having a difficult day. We start from what each person wants their week to look like. That might take in college or work, a regular swim, cooking their own meals, seeing family, or getting out into Bideford and along the coast. Where somebody finds noise or change hard, we keep to a predictable rhythm and prepare properly for anything out of the ordinary. The house belongs to the people who live in it, so decisions about food, decoration and how time is spent are theirs. We also take positive risk seriously. Being overprotective is easier for us and much worse for the person, so we talk things through with them and with those who know them well. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are used to detailed questions from families and commissioners and we welcome them. Please contact us if you would like to visit.
