About The Poplars
The Poplars is a residential care home in Whitwell, Derbyshire, supporting adults with learning disabilities. It is a small house and that is deliberate, because the kind of support we offer depends on knowing people properly and that is hard to do at scale. We treat this as the home of the people living in it rather than as a service they have been placed into. People decorate their own rooms, help decide what is cooked and when, and come and go to work, college, clubs and family as they choose. Our job is to make those things possible, not to organise them on anybody's behalf. Support is worked out person by person and agreed with them. Communication gets particular attention here, and we use whatever combination of speech, signing, symbols, objects and plain familiarity suits the individual. Getting that right is the difference between somebody making a decision and simply being told about one afterwards. Short respite stays are available, which can give a family carer a break or let somebody see how they get on here before anything longer is settled. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch if you would like to arrange a visit and see the house.
